Committee on Illegal Mining Seizes Over 14 Trucks, 4 Excavators

Date:

The Task Force Committee on Illegal Mining, has impounded more than 14 trucks and four excavators during an enforcement operation against illegal mining activities in the State.

The operation, led by the Committee Chairman and Commissioner for Environment and Mineral Resources, Rt. Hon. Nsikak Ekong, covered several sites, including a burrow pit located behind the Science Park at Ntak Inyang in Itu Local Government Area, where several individuals were apprehended, while others fled into nearby bushes to evade arrest.

Addressing the press after the exercise, Rt. Hon. Ekong reiterated the State government’s resolve to end environmental degradation caused by illegal mining. He warned that such activities significantly contribute to land degradation, erosion, and the destruction of natural habitats.

“This is precisely why His Excellency, Governor Umo Eno, deemed it necessary to inaugurate the Task Force on Illegal Mining,” the Commissioner stated.

He further emphasised that the State government would not tolerate any activity capable of undermining Governor Umo Eno’s development programmes aimed at safeguarding the lives and welfare of citizens.

The enforcement team also proceeded to another illegal mining site at Ekpri Nsukara, where the Commissioner warned that all those found culpable would face prosecution. He maintained that the task force would not relent in its mandate to protect the environment and enforce the relevant laws.
